What is it?

The Cinematic Time Machine: A Feminist Film Club is an online movie club celebrating the movies of yesteryear, but specifically those written, directed, produced by and starring women. We watch a diverse range of classic films and discuss women’s contributions from a feminist perspective.

Our mission is to provide an inclusive space for film enthusiasts to appreciate and recontextualize classic movies through a feminist lens

By showcasing these films and fostering discussions, we aim to bring women's contributions to the cinematic world out of the shadows.

How it works

🍿 Once you join the club, one of the first things you’ll be asked to do is join the Facebook community, so you can dive in to the chat and access all of the previous months movies and recipes.

🍿 Every quarter we pick a genre to enjoy. Currently it’s Resistance movies.

🍿 And then each month you will receive a movie choice within that genre carefully selected to highlight one of the amazing women who created or starred in it. The pick will come in a pdf format with links to rent/buy online.

🍿 A live watch-party for the selection on the last weekend of the month.

🍿 A Mid Month Mini which is an extra, movie recommendation, just for fun, in the middle of the month. This time it’s a female focused silent short film.

🍿 Plus you’ll receive recipes for a snack and a drink (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) to match the movie.

🍿 The movie selection and accompanying pdf factsheet and recipe cards will be posted in the community each month as well as emailed to you, so it’s introvert friendly too.

What we’re watching:

SPOOKY SEASON

September: I Married a Witch (1942) A cute comedy about a witch who sets out to wreak revenge on the descendants of her persecutor.

October: Arsenic and Old Lace (1944) A dark comedy about a hapless writer returns to his aunts with the happy news that he’s getting married only to find they have a very, very dark secret.

November: Dracula’s Daughter (1936) The sequel to the 1931 classic Dracula, in which his daughter steals his body in a desperate attempt to live as a human.

SCREWBALL COMEDY SEASON

Dec: My Man Godfrey (1936) Carole Lombard at her manic best in this classic comedy about class, privilege and social conscience.

Jan: His Girl Friday (1940) Rosalind Russell fires quips in this fast talking (and I really do mean fast) newspaper set comedy.

Feb: Bringing Up Baby (1938) Katharine Hepburn menaces Cary Grant with a leopard, among other things, as she woos his bemused paleontologist.

GANGSTER SEASON

Mar: Blondie Johnson (1933) Joan Blondell climbs the gangland ladder to become mob boss in this gender switched pre code take on the gangster flick.

Apr: Lady Scarface (1941) Another woman, this time Judith Anderson, leads an audacious robbery but is pursued by the cops.

May: Ball of Fire (1941) The live-action, gangster set remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs you didn’t know you needed in your life.

WAR SEASON

Jun: Mrs Miniver (1942) An understated British movie about keeping hope, and the home fires burning, during times of trouble.

Jul: 7 Women (1966) John Ford directs a stellar cast of women, including Anne Bancroft and Margaret Leighton, in this intense war-set epic.

Aug: Lifeboat (1944) Alfred Hitchcock directs Tallulah Bankhead in this claustrophobic survivor movie. She may be the only woman in the movie but her performance is towering!

Why is it feminist?

Because I am. I can’t separate my belief in equality from the way I view movies so I figured if I want to watch old films from a more modern perspective there must the others who do too. So why not unite and enjoy it together!
